A Boyfriend for Christmas opens with a premise so direct it borders on aggressive. A 13-year-old girl named Holly Grant sits on a mall Santa's lap and asks for a boyfriend. Not a pony. Not a Nintendo. A boyfriend. Twenty years later, a man shows up at her door on Christmas Day carrying a tree and wearing a bow on his chest. He hands her a note: "As promised, one boyfriend for Christmas." Kelli Williams plays Holly Grant, and she's the reason this movie works at all. Williams was deep into her run as Lindsay Dole on ABC's Emmy-winning legal drama The Practice when she made this film. Seven seasons of sparring with Dylan McDermott in a Boston law office gave her a sharpness that most Hallmark leads don't have. Holly is skeptical, career-focused, and slightly annoyed by the universe conspiring to deliver romance to her doorstep. Williams plays all of that without losing the warmth the genre requires.

Patrick Muldoon plays Ryan Hughes, the lawyer who shows up pretending to be "Douglas Firwood" (yes, like the tree). Muldoon had already built his career on soap opera charm, most notably as Richard Hart on Melrose Place and in the sci-fi action film Starship Troopers. He's tall, square-jawed, and comfortable in the role of a romantic lead who has to sustain a lie for the entire second act. The chemistry between Muldoon and Williams is better than the script strictly earns.

Then there's Charles Durning as Santa Claus. This deserves its own paragraph. Durning was a two-time Oscar nominee, a WWII veteran who landed at Normandy, and one of the most respected character actors in American film. He also played Santa in at least five different productions, including the Emmy-winning Mrs. Santa Claus opposite Angela Lansbury and the Sesame Street special Elmo Saves Christmas. By 2004, Durning had made Santa his second career. Nobody in television history has logged more hours in the red suit.

A Boyfriend for Christmas: The Hallmark Formula Before It Was a Formula

This movie aired on November 27, 2004, during the Hallmark Channel's early years of Christmas programming. The network wouldn't launch its now-famous "Countdown to Christmas" marathon until later, and the production pipeline that would eventually churn out dozens of holiday films per year was still forming. A Boyfriend for Christmas arrived before the template hardened.

You can feel the difference. The pacing is slower and more confident than later Hallmark productions. Director Kevin Connor, a British filmmaker who started his career directing 1970s adventure films like The Land That Time Forgot and At the Earth's Core, brings a workmanlike competence that keeps scenes from dragging. Connor had over 100 directing credits by this point, and that experience shows in how cleanly the movie moves between its romantic and comedic beats.

The script by Roger Schroeder has a structural problem that it never fully solves. Ryan can't tell Holly his real name because she's already furious at "Ryan Hughes" for seemingly failing to show up at a custody hearing. Every time he tries to confess, something interrupts. This device gets strained by the third or fourth interruption, but the movie compensates with enough supporting character warmth to keep you from checking your phone.

Why A Boyfriend for Christmas Still Gets Watched

Martin Mull appears in a supporting role, bringing the dry comedic timing he'd honed over decades in projects from Clue to Arrested Development to Roseanne. His presence adds a layer of quality that elevates the material. The same goes for the overall cast, which is stronger than what you'd typically find in a made-for-cable romantic comedy of this era.

The film earned a 2.7 Nielsen household rating on its premiere, making it the number-two broadcast in its time slot across all ad-supported cable networks and the top-rated program for women aged 25 to 54. For a Hallmark original in 2004, those were strong numbers. The movie has been in regular holiday rotation on the channel ever since.

At its core, A Boyfriend for Christmas is a movie about the gap between childhood belief and adult cynicism. Holly stopped believing in the magic of Christmas wishes sometime between age 13 and her career as a social worker. The movie's job is to close that gap in 90 minutes. It does so without being cloying, which is the highest compliment you can pay a Hallmark holiday film.

The movie was filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah, which provides a convincingly wintery setting without the production having to travel far from the usual TV filming infrastructure. The opening aerial shot of the city draped in holiday lights sets a tone that the rest of the movie sustains.
