The Night Before opens with a premise so sincere it could belong to a Hallmark movie: Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) loses both parents in a car accident on Christmas Eve, and his two best friends, Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie), vow to spend every Christmas Eve with him so he's never alone. For fourteen years they keep that promise, pub-crawling through New York City in ugly sweaters, building their own tradition. Then the movie hands Seth Rogen a bag of mushrooms and a stolen phone, and the whole thing detonates in the best possible way.
The Night Before Cast and What They Bring
Director Jonathan Levine reunited with Rogen after their 2011 film 50/50, and he understood something crucial: a good Christmas comedy needs real stakes hiding behind the jokes. Gordon-Levitt plays Ethan as a genuinely lost thirty-something, stuck in arrested development and unable to let go of either his ex-girlfriend Diana (Lizzy Caplan) or these annual Christmas Eve rituals. He's not a broad comedy archetype. He's the friend everyone has who peaked in his twenties and doesn't know what comes next.
Mackie's Chris is a rising football star who has started using steroids to keep his career alive, and the movie treats his insecurity with more nuance than you'd expect from a film where someone vomits in church. Rogen's Isaac, a soon-to-be father spiraling through a drug-fueled panic attack, gets the showiest material. His wife (Jillian Bell) hands him a box of party drugs as a "last hurrah" before fatherhood, and his subsequent odyssey through cocaine, mushrooms, and sheer terror at a midnight mass is the comedic centerpiece.
The supporting cast punches well above its weight. Michael Shannon plays a mysterious weed dealer named Mr. Green who dispenses unsolicited life wisdom alongside his product. Mindy Kaling appears as a friend of Diana's. Tracy Morgan, James Franco, and Miley Cyrus pop up in cameos that land because the film doesn't lean on them.
Is The Night Before a Christmas Movie?
Absolutely, and a more honest one than most. The Night Before uses Christmas Eve as more than a backdrop. The holiday forces these three men to confront the fact that their friendship tradition is ending. Isaac is becoming a father. Chris is famous. Ethan is the only one still clinging to the ritual because he's the only one who truly needs it.
The Nutcracka Ball, the mythical invite-only Christmas party they've been chasing for years, works as a perfect metaphor: the belief that one perfect night can keep everything from changing. When they finally get there, it's both everything and nothing they expected.
New York City at Christmas is shot with genuine warmth by cinematographer Brandon Trost. The film lingers on holiday window displays, steam rising from street grates past wreaths, crowded bars full of Santa hats. It captures the specific magic of being out in Manhattan on Christmas Eve, that feeling of the city belonging to anyone still walking through it.
Where It Works and Where It Doesn't
The drug sequences are the movie's biggest gamble, and they mostly pay off. Rogen's mushroom trip at midnight mass, complete with texting his unborn child photos of his dilated pupils, is genuinely hilarious. The film commits fully to the hallucination gags without losing the emotional thread underneath: Isaac is terrified of becoming a father, and no amount of drugs can drown that out.
The weaker stretches come when the plot mechanics take over. A stolen cell phone subplot involving Chris's secrets feels more like a screenwriting exercise than organic storytelling. Some of the cameos in the Nutcracka Ball sequence tip into self-congratulation. The film runs 101 minutes and could lose ten of them without anyone noticing.
But the emotional payoff earns its place. A late scene between Gordon-Levitt and Caplan in her apartment is played straight, and it works because the movie has banked enough goodwill. The final morning-after sequence, with the three friends on a snowy Manhattan rooftop, doesn't try to be profound. It just lets these guys sit together, changed, knowing this particular tradition has run its course.
The Night Before Rating
The Night Before landed on a 7 out of 10 from us. It's the rare R-rated Christmas comedy that remembers comedy works best when you care about the people doing stupid things. It doesn't reinvent the genre, and a few subplots feel undercooked, but the central trio has genuine chemistry, the NYC Christmas atmosphere is infectious, and Seth Rogen crying in a church pew while high on mushrooms is an image that has rightfully entered the holiday comedy canon.
Michael Shannon closing the film with one last cryptic piece of advice, walking off into the snow like some THC-infused Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, is exactly the kind of ending this movie deserves.

Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt wore the same ugly Christmas sweaters throughout the entire shoot, and the costume department had to maintain multiple identical copies because of the physical comedy scenes.
