Lyrics

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light,
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

The Story

"Silent Night" is far more than a Christmas carol — it is a piece of living history that has transcended borders, languages, and centuries. Written in 1818 in the small Alpine village of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, it was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas Church, accompanied only by guitar because the church organ had broken down.

Father Joseph Mohr had penned the poem two years earlier, and on that fateful evening he asked schoolteacher and organist Franz Xaver Gruber to set it to music for two voices and guitar. The result was a gentle, lilting melody that captured the stillness and wonder of the Nativity like nothing before it.

The carol spread through Tyrolean folk singers and travelling merchants, eventually reaching concert halls across Europe and beyond. By the early 20th century, it had been translated into virtually every written language. In 1914, during the famous Christmas Truce of World War I, soldiers on both sides of the Western Front sang "Silent Night" — each in their own tongue — creating one of the most poignant moments in wartime history.

UNESCO recognized "Silent Night" as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011. The chapel where it was first performed is now a memorial, visited by thousands each December who come to hear the carol sung at midnight mass in its birthplace.
